For teachers

2014, 2014

Under the guidance of Manfred Krifka, we edited a fun book at ZAS for German school teachers. The book presents 26 languages that are spoken most by students with migratory/multilingual background in German schools. The chapters include general background, sounds and writing, sentence structure, word structure and vocabulary. They present noteworthy facts about the languages, enriched by interesting tales in the margins, tounge-twisters, cartoons and riddles:

Krifka, Manfred, Joanna Blaszcsak, Annette Leßmöllmann, André Meinunger, Barbara Stiebels, Rosemarie Tracy & Hubert Truckenbrodt (eds.). 2014. Das mehrsprachige Klassenzimmer. Über die Muttersprachen unserer Schüler. Heidelberg: Springer.

I wrote the chapter on German for the book, which serves as a point of comparison for the other languages:

Truckenbrodt, Hubert. 2014. Das Deutsche. In Manfred Krifka, Joanna Blaszczak, Annette Leßmöllmann, André Meinunger, Barbara Stiebels, Rosemarie Tracy & Hubert Truckenbrodt (eds.), Das mehrsprachige Klassenzimmer. Über die Muttersprachen unserer Schüler, 35-65. Heidelberg: Springer.

We are proud that the state of Baden-Württemberg has given each school in Baden-Württemberg a copy of the book in October 2014.

Alex Lohse (DaZ, German as a second language) and I cooperated on a pedagogical comparison of German and Turkish relative clauses in a journal for school teachers of German. The contribution includes some general discussion of language comparison in the classroom and three working sheets for school students and their answers.
